National Unity

An essential goal of good governance is a stable and united country. The CCCE has a long and distinguished record of support for initiatives to strengthen national unity.

  • The CCCE offered vigorous support for the Meech Lake and Charlottetown constitutional accords.
  • In the wake of the narrow 1995 referendum victory in Quebec, the CCCE hosted the Confederation 2000 constitutional conferences, which brought together more than 100 leaders from all sectors and regions of the country to consider new strategies for renewing the Canadian federation.
  • Inspired by these discussions, the CCCE conceived and advanced an idea that evolved into the Calgary Declaration. The declaration was signed in 1997 by all of the premiers except Quebec's separatist leader Lucien Bouchard and subsequently passed by their respective legislatures.
