Environmentally responsible business practices go hand in hand with
long-term economic growth and enhanced prosperity. When making public
policy choices, it is important for citizens to be fully aware of both
the costs and the benefits of measures intended to protect the environment.
The Council has been committed to the principle of sustainable development
for decades, and has been particularly active in encouraging realistic
and effective strategies for addressing global climate change.
In 2007, the Council's Task Force on Environmental Leadership published
Clean
Growth: Building a Canadian Environmental Superpower. This widely
acclaimed policy declaration reflected a groundbreaking consensus across
the business community on five key principles. It called for a coherent
national plan to address climate change; a focus on investment in new
technologies for reducing emissions of greenhouse gases; the effective
use of targets to spur investment; the power of price signals to change
business and consumer behaviour; and the importance of Canadian leadership
globally. The declaration continues to guide the Council's work on climate
change both within Canada and in contributing to North American and
global initiatives.
