Canada’s Role in the World

Canadians are proud of their country’s contributions to global peace and security and to the spread of democratic institutions and values. Our security and prosperity rely on global stability, the rule of law, respect for human rights and cooperation among sovereign states.

As a middle power, Canada has only limited capacity to help create such a global environment. To be credible, our investments in diplomacy, development and defence must be significant. To be effective, these investments also must be focused and mutually supporting.

As a country heavily dependent on trade, Canada must be a leader in the promotion of trade and investment liberalization.

In addition to providing relief from human misery, Canada’s international development policy should focus on strengthening the skills, competencies and abilities of people and communities in developing societies.

The CCCE maintains strong relationships with governments and business organizations in many of Canada’s key trading partners worldwide and participates actively in efforts to strengthen these relationships, especially with China, the European Union, Japan and India.
